If you are active in your kitchen, then you are probably getting a lot of use out of your countertops. Granite is a strong material and can handle a lot of wear and tear. However, there are some very specific issues that may be ruining your granite countertops. Here is a rundown of what actions you should avoid to keep your granite countertops in pristine condition.

Acid is Not a Friend to Granite Countertops

Acidic foods and products can damage the seal on granite and etch the surface which can cause staining. In the kitchen, use cutting boards if you are cutting lemons and limes and be careful with other acidic products. In your bathroom, have a basket or mat for any lotions or scents that may contain acidic liquids.

Here are some items that you will want to protect your granite from:

  • Citrus (grapefruit, oranges, limes, lemons)
  • Vinegar
  • Certain Lotions
  • Perfume
  • Cologne
  • Nail Polish
  • Soft Drinks

Do Not Put Hot Pots and Pans on Your Granite Countertop

Granite is one of the strongest materials you can use for your countertops. Granite comes from igneous rock which derives from magma. It can handle very high temperatures. However, when granite is installed, it is typically coated with a sealant protection. Placing hot pots and pans can weaken the sealant leaving your granite more exposed to staining.

Clean Up Your Spills

From drinks to oil splattering on your granite surface from cooking, try your best to immediately clean up any spills that impact your countertop. As noted above, acidic and other liquids can wear down your sealant and lead to staining. When you have a spill, absorb the liquid and then use soap and water to clean the area thoroughly.

Do Not Sit on Your Granite Countertop

Granite is filled with grooves called striations which are vulnerable to cracking under too much weight.  Placing heavy appliances or your bodyweight could cause cracks in your countertop and lead to a replacement. If you need to change a lightbulb, paint or simply want to unload something heavy, find another surface to use. Your bank account will thank you.

Even Granite Isn’t Impervious

Granite is one of the strongest materials you can find, but it’s not invincible. The items outlined in this blog are easily avoidable. Doing so will assure that your beautiful granite countertops stay that way for a very long time.

If you have already stained or cracked your granite countertop, you may need a replacement. The professionals at Affordable Granite Concepts will find you the perfect material to fit your design needs.
